Shaking Map Usage

Basic shaking map usage and help.

The current earthquake (indicated by a star) is shown along with felt reports (indicated by circles), the colour of which represent the intensity of shaking on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. Move your mouse/pointer over the star or circle to obtain more information about the quake or reports.

Additional map layers representing instrumental shaking can be selected from the drop down menu on the right of the menu bar. Use your mouse/pointer to obtain specific information about the data from that device.

The icons on the menu bar perform different functionalities:

  • Pan: Grab an area of the map and drag or pan across it, click on the icon to switch to Pan state (indicated by a red circle around the icon) first if it is not already on.
  • Zoom in: Zoom into a specific area of the map for more detail. Click on the icon to zoom in, or click on the icon to switch to Zoom in state (indicated by a red circle around the icon), then click on the map to zoom in and move the map centre to the point of mouse click.
  • Zoom out: Zoom out from the current magnification level.
  • Restore: Restore the map to its original x-y co-ordinates and magnification.
  • Refresh: Refresh the map to show the latest data from recent seismic events.
