article: Sep 26 2007 - Mt Ruapehu erupts, scientists to visit summit

Mt Ruapehu erupts, scientists to visit summit to access the extent of last nights eruption.

GNS Science and Department of Conservation scientists are shortly due to take off on a flight to the summit of Mt Ruapehu to assess the extent of last night’s eruption. They hope to be able to confirm the extent of ash fall and confirm the two lahars that are thought to have cascaded down the mountain. The mountain has remained quiet since the eruption at around 8:20 pm last night with no further seismic activity recorded. A response agency briefing will be held at Whakapapa at 8 am, followed at 9 am by a media briefing at the Whakapapa Visitors Centre.
