  • A new continuous GPS site near Hunterville, Ohingaiti (OHIN) was made fully operational.

Earthquakes

  • The most significant earthquake of the month occurred on September 1, magnitude 5.8, 10 km south-east of Turangi, 80 km deep. It was felt from the Bay of Plenty to Dunedin, with a maximum intensity of MM 5 in the central North Island.

Reported Landslides

Monday September 1

  • Kawakawa Bay, five houses affected by creeping landslide, road closed. Slip first noted on Turei Hill on August 25.

Tuesday September 2

  • 5 houses evacuated, Clovelly Road, Bucklands Beach. Houses breaking up with cracks and breaking glass as cliff collapses slowly.

Friday September 16

  • Monsoon buckets used in attempt to remove loose debris on slip at Kawakawa Bay. Road re-opened to one lane on September 26.

Tuesday September 23

  • Slip on Milford Road 5 km from Milford Sound fell from Mt Underwood and blocked road completely over a length of 150 m. Road re-opened Saturday 27 September.
