Operations

  • A new microphone site Turoa Road End (TOVZ) was installed on Mount Ruapehu as part of the Eruption Detection System (EDS) upgrade for the Department of Conservation.
  • The camera located on the crater floor at White Island was replaced. It had operated in this harsh environment since October 2001.

Earthquakes

  • The most significant earthquake of the month occurred on February 3, magnitude 4.5, 10 km west of Te Kaha, 50 km deep. It was felt in the eastern Bay of Plenty with minor damage reported at Omaio.

Reported Landslides

Thursday February 12

  • A slip at about 9 am on SH 1 near the Fisherman’s Table restaurant (south of Paekakariki) caused delays to traffic.

Friday February 20

  • Several slips causing traffic delays were reported on SH 2, the Rimutaka Hill, on the Featherston side.
