The magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred in the Pacific tectonic plate close to the trench where it meets the Australian plate. The epicentre was 160 km from Raoul Island and 920 km from Tonga.

A tsunami alert was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) this morning and confirmed by observation at Raoul Island. It was later cancelled, after New Zealand scientists using data from deep ocean wave-measuring buoys and tsunami models confirmed only a minor threat to New Zealand.

The maximum observed wave height was 1 metre at the two tsunami gauges located on Raoul Island, operated by GeoNet and funded by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) are New Zealand's tsunami warning agency. For more information on alerts and what you should do when a warning is issued, visit their website.
