Aug 3 1996, 10:00 am - White Island Volcano

Seismic activity at White Island has increased during the past 24 hours. Several earthquakes were recorded at White Island between noon and 13:00 yesterday, the largest being a volcanic earthquake at 12:41 NZST. This activity preceded an increase in volcanic tremor which lasted from approximately 15:00 until around 07:00 this morning. The amplitude of this tremor is smaller than that recorded on July 27 and 28, but is greater than that recorded during the intervening week. No reports have been received of surface activity accompanying this seismicity.

We advise the Alert Level remains at Level 1.
