Science Alert Bulletin RUA-20-06/02 - Moderate volcanic earthquake at Ruapehu Volcano – Alert Level remains at Level 1; eruption cannot be confirmed

A moderate volcanic earthquake (magnitude 2.8) occurred at Ruapehu at 10.30 pm last night.

We cannot confirm if there was an associated eruption because attempts this morning the view the crater lake area from an aircraft failed due to poor weather.

Monitoring instruments suggest that any eruption would have been small.

Careful monitoring of the volcano will continue.

The Alert Level remains at 1, signs of volcano unrest.
