Northland includes the Kaikohe-Bay of Islands, Puhipuhi and Whangarei volcanic centres.

Volcanism began in the Northland area around 2.3 million years ago and has continued until recent geological times. The landscape features remnants of lava flows and cones.
Most Recent Eruption
- Where: Te Puke, north-west of Paihia
- When: around 1,300 - 1,800 years ago
- Effects: Explosive activity with lava flows from four well-preserved scoria cones.
What does GeoNet do?
- Seismic monitoring: 2 seismographs situated at Omahuta (OUZ) and Waipu Caves (WCZ).
